At UNL’s Department of Earth & Atmospheric Sciences, the world is our laboratory.

With the option to major in either geology or meteorology-climatology, our undergraduate and graduate students work hand-in-hand with expert faculty on innovative, exciting research projects on every continent, and across the seven seas.

So you’re going to need your passport.

Because, while we offer a superb student-teacher ratio, small classes that are actually taught by veteran professors (rather than graduate students), high-quality advising, compelling social and educational activities, and a collaborative environment that includes supportive, engaged alumni, it’s the unparalleled field experience that really ignites our students’ passions.

From the Antarctic to the Arctic and all points in-between, our students experience unique cultures while building impressive résumés full of invaluable — often thrilling — real-world experience.

They develop versatile skills, such as analytical problem solving, leadership, communication, and organization, and hone specific expertise in everything from climate modeling and weather forecasting to evolution and resource exploration. Students learn to reconstruct Earth’s past, understand its present, and predict its future.

Our graduates enjoy very high employment rates, going on to rewarding, gainful careers in all areas of government, industry, and education.
