UMD Geological Sciences has a great tradition in undergraduate education. We offer close student-faculty interactions, field-oriented learning, and student research opportunities. Our faculty offer exceptional learning and research opportunities in geology, economic geology, environmental geology and paleoclimatology, geochemistry, geophysics, glacial geology and geomorphology, hydrogeology, limnology, planetary geology, sedimentology, and tectonics. 

The Department of Geological Sciences offers several undergraduate programs:  B.S. program, B.S. program with mineral exploration and mining option, B.A. program in the liberal arts, and Minor in Geological Sciences.  UMD Geological Sciences offers programs leading to the M.S or Ph.D. within the Graduate School of the University of Minnesota. Faculty and students have a close working relationship. Programs are tailored to the area of the student's specialization, in consultation with a faculty advisor.
